This is my first GPS purchase ever. I’m so thrilled about this TomTom that I had to write a review.
I Bought it 2 hours ago, and within 5 minutes of getting it out of the box I hard 90% of the features figured out. How?
TomTom has an on-screen tutorial on how to use it. It took me about 3 minutes to go through them all.
Also, the instruction booklet is the best I’ve seen in a gadget. Big pictures with minimal writing. Where most companies get this wrong, TomTom has one of the easiest to follow set-ups I’ve seen. The only thing you’ll need the manual for is how to use the mount and turn the device on (2-second push on the power button).
Mounting it was a cinch– and I can’t believe how solidly the windshield mount holds the GPS to the windshield.
The user interface (ease of use) is amazing. Super simple… perfect for giving this to your tech-averse grandpa.
Leo Laporte (The Tech Guy on radio and TV) recommended the TomTom ONE 135 for a bargain priced GPS, which is why I bought this newer 140. I definitely agree with his verdict…

I’m very pleased with this GPS. The new IQ routing feature I believe significantly improves the routing from previous TomTom models. Even if you don’t still don’t like where it wants to take you, it adjusts itself quickly to where how you probably want to travel. It’s still not perfect, which I don’t think there is a GPS system or even an online map system that is. And of course the Mapshare system is great by allowing you to edit the maps yourself and share them. The advance lance guidance is a nice feature which can help on highways you’re not familiar with.

I find the TomTom One very good and fairly easy to use once you get used to it. The clarity on lane changes and exit is excellent and very helpful when bypassing cities. Portability is exceptional as well.

I travel Sunday through Friday for work, and then sometimes I travel with my family on the weekend. My Tom Tom (affectionately known as Gator Boy, he has an Australian voice, he should be Croc boy, but Gator Boy sounds better) is with me all the way. Now my husband’s Tom Tom has Homer Simpson’s voice – he’s not allowed to travel with me. Homer isn’t, my husband is allowed!
I travel all over the country, and even took my Tom Tom to Hawaii. Works like a charm (though sometimes I take the adventurous way…lol). Highly recommended travel companion!

I own a Garmin (comparative in price)and I have tried this TomTom. The TomTom is very easy to use and set up is great. It’s very compact. I like how you can download other owner’s street corrections. It also has a lot of customizing features.
What I don’t like.
The TomTom seems to always pick out of the way directions both in distance and in time. Garmin picks the same routes I would have taken 9 out of 10 times.
You have to manually change the display from night to day. I leave very early in the morning so I need night-time display and then I have to change it back to day-time when I’m leaving work to go home. Not a big deal, but the Garmin does it automatically based on sunrise and sunset times (a nice feature while you are driving). You also cannot change the brightness on the display (you can on the Garmin).
If you zoom out on the display, it doesn’t stay zoomed out. As soon as you come to the next calculated turn, it zooms in and stays zoomed in. The Garmin also zooms in for the turn but then zooms back out to where you set it.
After using both products, I love my Garmin and I am putting my TomTom on Ebay.
