It’s a small, simple gps with built-in maps, voice directions, and speech-to-text for street names. It worked right out of the box. Minor complaints: 1) UI sometimes confusing – e.g. when you get a street name match, it is not clear that there is a list of alternatives; 2) it shows mileage to next turn, and time to destination, but not any variations of this – we want also mileage to destination; 3) volume has to be all the way up to be heard over road noise; 4) battery life is too short to be useful for anything – maybe unit is faulty.

We purchased the Roadmate 1212, used for a few days and had to returned. I like the GPS very much when it worked. The problems was it constantly looses signal. More so in Maine and was useless half the time. Less of a problem when we drove south toward PA and MD, but still lost signal once in a while.

I actually purchased my 1212 broken off ebay. After some tweaking, I managed to make the darn thing boot again and got some software reloaded on it. Beginning with the original software, I must say I was very disgusted in the quality. I find the menu’s to be extremely clunky, the voice prompts annoying, and the map data not so up to date.
This aside, I REALLY like the quality of this device. The screen is exceptionally bright and crisp. The touch screen is very accurate. Build quality is exceptional with nice plastic and very ridged seams. It’s ashame the software is on such a lower level than the hardware…
And to follow up with some other reviews, this device is VERY picky about chargers. None of my USB chargers will charge this device, and few will power it. That’s probably my biggest gripe about this device, besides the software. However, that much can be fixed (ahem…not to be mentioned here…)

I like the product a lot, but one thing is missing. There should be a written manual and not just a cd. It’s a pain to have to go and insert the disc in the computer anytime you ave a question.

I purchased the Magellan RoadMate 1212 as a Christmas gift for my husband. It worked well on Christmas day to navigate us home. The second attempt to use the GPS the car adapter no longer worked. They sent us a new adapter in late February. The third attempt to use it was just the other day, March 6th to be exact. It worked for us as we drove 10 miles across the city for lunch. On the return trip it became unresponsive. It would do nothing. I made numerous efforts to input our home address, but it was stuck. The screen would not change no matter what function was touched. When I touched an arrow on the top right corner, the LCD screen cracked. My touch was minimal pressure and my husband and I were very surprised to see that it cracked so easily. I called Magellan and escalated to the last person in the chain that will speak to a customer. The only help that was offered was to replace the screen at my expense-over $100+taxes. That was about what I paid for the unit to start with. They accused me of damaging the screen by use of extreme pressure. Only touch and minimal pressure were used. I was told that the LCD screen is the same in all their products and that they are not warranted. When I explained there was an underlying problem before the screen cracked, they said they could do nothing about that at this point. This company does not stand behind it’s own products. We could live with the small crack but the GPS unit has not been functional since that fated trip home on March 6th. Now my husband is stuck with a defective GPS. Magellan may be going under or maybe these dodging tactics are their standard practice to keep their costs low. Either way, do business with this company at your own risk. Until now I had never encountered a business unwilling to do the right thing for their customers.
